Neorealism and Kant: No Pacific UnionDepartment of Political Science, National University of Singapore Georg Sørensen's (1992) article on the tendency of democracies to avoid wars with each other reaffirms Kant's notion of a `pacific union' of liberal states and argues that mainstream neorealism can accommodate such a phenomenon Despite Sørensen's reinterpretation, however, the Kantian argument remains dubious, and the inside-out approach to explaining peace among democracies runs counter to a fundamental neorealist premise.
