The End of International War? Armed Conflict 1989-95

There were 96 armed conflicts in the world during the period 1989-95, 35 of these conflicts were active in 1995, including six that were large enough to be classified as wars. A decrease in the total annual number of armed conflicts, as well as the number of wars, was recorded since the peak year 1992 when there were 55 armed conflicts of which 20 were wars. Most conflicts have concerned internal issues. However, there was at least one interstate armed conflict each year, except 1993 and 1994. In 1995, Ecuador and Peru were involved in a territorial conflict. Although the phenomenon of international war remains rare, it is premature to conclude that it has become obsolete.
